SENA 50R Bluetooth Headset & Intercom - Single

Although the 50R is a great product when it works, it can be a real pain when you want to update the firmware if you have an issue or want to reset the product. Took me two days of trying and then managed to get an email conversation with Sena but did not have any luck with there suggestions. Decided to go back to Sportsbikeshop.co.uk as it was still under warranty. They were fantastic once again, and replaced the product within 3 days. They said that Sena were unable to resolve the issue. A statement from Sena to me via email during our communication was 'not to use their own supplied cable for updating firmware from your computer' bizarrely! They said to use a standard USB- C wire to do this. Still didn't fully resolve the issues I had. Thankfully Sportsbikeshop.co.uk did!

The Sena 50R is quite bulky on the side of the helmet, but we were told it is smaller than competitive products. Unfortunately once fitted and connected with another Sena fitted helmet this unit could hear the other but the microphone did not work. Having tried the alternative (boom) mike, which did not work either, am now having to take it back to the shop. On the other hand, Sportsbikeshop in Bristol is really good, service is excellent and the policy of ordering items to try on and compare is unrivalled.

The 50R works extremely well as long and you're prepared to persevere! First issue, one of the speakers was faulty. Replacement received with thanks btw. Second issue, it consistently turned itself off after just a few minutes. Third issue, the phone app is counter intuitive and very poorly documented. Fourth issue, the PC software documentation has at least one glaring error in it. It instructs you to connect the 50R to your PC with 'the enclosed USB lead'. This does not work. However, if you use a normal USB lead, i.e. one without the wireless network facility that the 'enclosed USB lead' has, it does work. You can then communicate with the 50R, upload the latest firmware - and it will no longer turn itself off after a few minutes. Simples? Not!. But having jumped through all these hoops, it works extremely well..... Great product; iffy software; terrible documentation.

Having had Autocom for over 20 years I did not want to change! But; I was forced as all the guys in the group had all adopted Senna's as they were integrated with their new helmets, BUT, I have to admit the system works very well with no connecting cables to mess about with, the connection between bike to bike is okay if not PMR radio quality, but more than adequate and easy to use when you set it up, the app took a little time to figure out when setting groups but straightforward once you get going. The proof of how good it is will be when touring France next week. So in conclusion for most people it is excellent, but a professional user I would stick with a wired system and PMR radio.

There are some users that say this is not the best and move to another well known product. This is my second one of these and I've never ever had a single issue. Full voice prompts like Hey Sena, Hey Siri etc and this is the latest version with better speakers and buttons are better to feel through thick gloves on the go.

The headset is well made. There are a few issues however. First, it shipped without installation instructions in the box. Second, it isn't really loud enough at motorway speeds. Third, the app is buggy as HELL! It disconnects from the app (but not the phone) frequently and updating the firmware is impossible (to me).
Consider the Cardo systems as well before buying.
