Merlin Chigwell Utility Textile Jacket - Black

The Chigwell jacket is a great all round jacket. Ideal and comfortable without the liner on a sunny day and equally capable in wet weather with the zip in liner. The fit is good for the average man. I am a 44" chest & 34" waist and the large is great. The jacket looks smart and oozes quality. The collar is a little snug with the liner in but I'm sure it will soften in time.

I wanted the retro look with modern materials and protection and the jacket is spot on for that and being able to take liner out makes it great for hot days.
In sizing, I would go one down if you like a tighter fit.
It's well made and quality, better than some far more expensive kit

I wanted a new jacket that would work well for an adventure dual sport style, could cope with the British summer but equally the less dependable shoulder seasons.

I'd been increasingly aware of British brand Merlin and hearing only good things so I took the plunge with their Chigwell Utility jacket in black. After checking the size guides I was Large (42" chest 34" waist) but there was way too much volume in the body for me so I exchanged for Medium which is spot on - with the liner or without.

Build quality is superb, great design and finishing touches like the leather trim to cuffs and neck stand out along with branded press studs in a brass colour. Classy stuff Merlin.

Riding in hot weather currently and the mesh panels work brilliantly to provide cooling even at low speeds. Armour feels reassuring but doesn't bulk the jacket. Plenty of pocket space (love the little ear plug stash on the sleeve). Pairs well with riding jeans.

With a classic design style that works for road warriors, explorers and retro fans alike, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this jacket.

Yet to be weather tested on the colder, wetter days but I am confident it's up to the job.

Great jacket. Arrived just in time for me to try it out touring around scotland last week. It's warm, comfortable and waterproof. Plenty of pockets for stuff. Only thing I would say is buy a size bigger. I'm usually a medium but tried the medium in local bike shop & it was tight. Ordered large from sportsbikeshop and it fits good.

I've only worn it a couple of times but so far it's been great, nice and warm with plenty of pockets. Fit is great, size large would recommend this jacket.

This type of jacket never appealed to me before as I am not keen on removable wp liners if I am away in Europe touring.
However, as my touring days are over I think this is a great jacket for day riding. Except, if it's warm and wet as the wp liner is part of warm liner so both must be in or out!
Plenty of pockets for phones, cameras, documents even booklets or maps in the rear pockets. Great look and quality.
For me the padded collar of the liner is too much and stops me doing up the collar of the jacket - I do have a thick neck (17). I have overcome this by removing the padding in the neck of the liner. Overall, believe it or not, I really like the jacket due to its style, pockets and quality. Also, its British company.

Merlin is a company I can always go to knowing that quality is at the top of the list.

I off road and found getting overheated a real problem. This jacket ticked all the bodies I needed it too. Leaving early morning it's always a little brisk but the internal jacket does an excellent job of keeping you warm and when getting to the trail I'm able to take it out easily and it then becomes a fully breathe-able jacket keeping me cool.

This jacket would have been a five star however, you have some excellent pockets on and in this jacket but when taking the liner out you only have the external ones.

Having a lager IPhone I can just about squeeze this into the front bottom pockets, yes you have a big pocket at the rear but this is not convenient enough for easy access.

Another point is when taking the inner jacket out it becomes a bigger jacket as you lose the padding. On the arms you have Velcro straps to adjust which is a great idea. On the body there is nothing. A couple of straps either side would have been excellent to enable you to fit it better.

Would I recommend this yes, value for money definitely it comes wilt all the armour and the quality is top again from Merlin. And like my other Merlin jacket they only get better with age rather than falling apart.
