This Furygan Ladies Odessa Vented 3-in-1 is a summer textile jacket that’s designed to be versatile enough to wear when the weather isn’t so great.
It has mesh panels to keep you cool in the peak warmth of summer, but comes with separate, removable thermal and waterproof liners for occasions when it rains or the summer evening chill sets in.
I like Furygan’s thinking, however I’d prefer somewhere to tuck the extra layers when they’re not in use, like the rear pocket you find on similar touring jackets.
Also letting it down, unfortunately for me, is the size range of Furygan ladies gear. I am a typical size 12 in normal clothing, but Furygan’s sizing means I sit at an awkward crossover point in their range.
Furygan offer fewer sizes than most manufacturers, giving me a choice of a 10-12 or a 14-16. I found the 10-12 too much of a squeeze, and the 14-16 a little too loose. I eventually chose the bigger size, preferring to be comfortable in something a bit too loose rather than squeezing into something too small.
For the most part the larger size works OK for me, but I think increasing the amount of adjustment would help these sizes cover a wider range of riders.
Fastening the poppers at the biceps tightens around the arms a little and means it fits well if the jacket’s internal liners are in place. But these poppers are designed to take up the slack when the liners are removed, and this didn’t work for me as I couldn’t tighten the jacket any further.
A Velcro tab and short vertical zip allow adjustment at each hip, but having sized up I would have preferred more adjustment on the Velcro tab, to be able to take in more of the excess.
Mesh panels down the front of the jacket are very effective at drawing in air to the chest and also under my arms, which kept me very cool. A large section of the back is mesh, which draws the air around the whole torso and gives a great flow of air.
I enjoyed wearing this jacket on a warm spring day where it got up to 25°C and I was able to take out both linings and just wear the outer jacket. The airflow around my body was great, and I wished I had this jacket for a tour of Wales in 40°C heat in 2022.
The venting is so good that I would only wear this jacket without the inner layers when the temperature reaches the mid-twenties. For anything below that I add the waterproof or thermal layer, and I want all three when the temperature falls into the late teens.
By the time it gets down to around 15 degrees, I would want an additional layer underneath. On a ride in 12ºC I felt chilly even with both liners attached inside the jacket and my Knox windproof jacket underneath it.
I think of myself as someone who feels the cold, so I appreciate this won’t be the same for all riders.
I found the press stud on the collar simpler to secure than on other jackets, but it would chafe against my neck for the first 10 mins or so of a ride before settling down and causing no issues after that.
This jacket suffers from something I find frustrating on many jackets - the cuff opening is not wide enough. It took a great amount of patience and a lot of faffing to fit a pair of slim-fitting long gloves under the cuff. It’s not something I would like to do frequently or if in any sort of rush.
If you’re like me and suffer from cold hands even on mild days, either make sure you have a pair of short winter gloves or accept you’ll have to wear the gauntlet over the jacket cuff, which is not ideal if it rains.
Realistically, most riders will be wearing this jacket in warm weather and my DXR Patok GT Spring Gloves work well with these cuffs, as do a pair of Furygan's Ladies TD21 Vented gloves.
There are belt loop attachments, but no zip attachments. I have mostly worn this jacket with the Furygan Ladies Softshell Textile Trousers, which have no accommodation for a belt, so there’s no way of attaching to the jacket. As the temperature has increased I’ve worn this jacket with denim jeans and attached the loops on the jacket to the belt in the jeans.
The Odessa has a good amount of pockets considering it’s a simple summer jacket. It has one elasticated pocket in the thermal liner, two zipped Napoleon pockets inside the outer jacket and a zipped exterior pocket at each hip. The elasticated inner pocket is not as secure as the others, so I avoid putting anything of value in it.
In terms of the waterproofing from the rain layer, I’ve only caught a light but lengthy shower while wearing this jacket - and the waterproof lining kept the rain out. This is not a jacket I would choose to wear for a wet ride, but I’m confident it will keep me dry if it rains while I am out on a ride.
The Ladies Odessa 3in1 comes with elbow and shoulder armour, which meets Level 1 of the CE standard. There is a pocket for a full-sized Furygan D3O Full Back Fury Back Protector in this jacket, but you will have to buy one separately. The overall CE rating is Level A, the basic level of three within the current standard.
Overall, I think this is a great jacket. If your size suits Furygan’s sizing then it’s versatile, stylish and will be perfect to wear on hot summer days.
